RESOURCE

Untitled.jpg

This resource was used in lesson 6 of 10 as an appendix. The main focus of the lesson was for students to create a final copy of an information report on an animal that their group chose from a previous lesson. The students had already proceeded in researching their chosen andimal and had started organising their information in lesson 5 of 10. The resource above is a poster which can be printed out to which students can refer to when they are unsure while organising the paragraphs for their information report. It consists of a clear guideline of the steps and structure of an information report assisting students to correctly structure their own writing. It is also specifically good for this particular lesson as the poster has its own ‘animal’ category giving students hints of what they could research or write about for their chosen animal. These include the animal’s appearance, habitat, Movement, Food, Behaviour and Life cycle (Eather, 2004-2010).

While the lesson was a focus of an information report on a chosen living animal, the poster also shows subheadings that students would consider using when writing on other topics such as people, objects or places. Although this poster was not used as a main focus for the lesson, it relates directly to the writing component of the literacy for the lesson which was that students would create a proofread and original piece of work which showed correct grammar, sentence structure and was specific to the text type. In order for better learning to occur the "classroom spaces must be rich, vibrant and supportive" (Winch, 2006, p.487). By putting up colourful posters that students know they can refer to can allow students to understand that their classroom is a supporitve learning further allowing them to produce bettwe quality work.
